In September 2017, energy experts and activists from 20 countries gathered in Spain and explored how clean, renewable energy can remain in people's hands.

For four days, people shared practical skills for how to create energy cooperatives and community energy projects, shared stories of victories and ongoing struggles and gathered tips to grow the movement of people owning and controlling energy.

The majority of electricity supplied to citizens across Europe is supplied by only a handful of big Energy companies. In the UK "the big six" supplies 90% of energy customers, in Germany five companies have a similar share and in Spain only three energy corporations are dominant , People are fed up with this and are moving towards an entirely different energy system – one that gives people and communities ownership over their own, renewable energy systems.

Beacons of hope shine out from amongst an otherwise gloomy 'winter package' according to Friends of the Earth Europe, as the European Commission announced its proposals for energy efficiency and renewable energy today.

On the 30th November, the European Commission is expected to publish its winter package, a long-awaited, key piece of the Energy Union strategy. According to environmental groups, leaked documents show that the package will likely disregard the Paris Agreement and fall well short of what the EU needs to do to pull its weight in the fight against climate change.

Over half of citizens in the European Union could be generating their own renewable electricity by 2050, according to new research released today.

The research outlines the potential for citizen-owned renewable energy projects in Europe, where 264 million "energy citizens" could generate 45% of the European Union's electricity needs by 2050 – as part of a democratised energy system.

Europe is turning its back on December's climate agreement in Paris, and further shackling itself to fossil fuels, according to Friends of the Earth Europe. The European Commission's 'energy security package', announced today, is the first big test for Europe's energy future, and prioritises subsidies for, and investments in, dirty fossil fuels, including gas, and the infrastructure required for them – locking Europe into decades of fossil fuel use.

Europe's renewable energy future must have communities at its core, according to Friends of the Earth Europe, as the public consultation on the next European renewable energy directive closes today.

The European Commission sought public opinions on what the future for renewable energy should look like in Europe, and the role of "empowered" consumers. Friends of the Earth Europe is calling for the right of communities to produce and supply renewable energy to be enshrined in the next directive.

The EU’s energy strategy is dangerously at odds with the urgent need to transform Europe’s energy system and fight climate change, Friends of the Earth Europe has said today in response to the publication of a progress report.

The European Commission vice president for the energy union, Maroš Šefčovič, gave his ‘State of the Energy Union’ speech in Brussels, and set out next steps for Europe's energy future.
